Dr. Maharaj K. Ticku, TX
Dr. Maharaj K. Ticku, professor of pharmacology and psychiatry at the Health Science Center, has received one of the most prestigious awards presented by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The MERIT Award ensures the continuation of his important research through at least 2010. The MERIT Award Program, short for "Method to Extend Research in Time," recognizes researchers with distinguished track records of scientific achievement. Dr. Ticku, who studies the genes that are affected by chronic alcohol intake, has a new five-year, $1.495 million grant from the NIH’s National Institute of Alcoholic Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Dr. Ticku, a Ph.D. graduate in biochemical pharmacology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, has held NIH/NIAAA funding since joining the Health Science Center faculty in 1978. Dr. Ticku is a member of many societies including ASPET; Society of Neuroscience; American college of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP); Research Society on Alcoholism; Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP); Society of Neurochemistry and ISBRA. He has chaired many national and international symposiums. Dr. Ticku's research has continuously been funded by NIH/NIAAA since 1979. Additionally, Dr. Ticku has served on NIH-NINDS and NIH-NIAAA study sections, and Chaired many Special Review Committees of NIAAA. He also served as a consultant to United Nations. Dr. Ticku is currently the recipient of a MERIT Award from NIH-NIAAA (2000-2010). Dr. Ticku has numerous publications to his credit. 2. Dr. Madhu Bazaz Wangu
Dr. Madhu Bazaz
Wangu was born in Kashmir. She received her Graduate degree in Art
History at the M.S. University of Baroda, India and her Ph.D. in
Religious Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. She was
a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Harvard University (1989- 1991) and
Research Associate at the University of Pittsburgh (1995-2000).
For the last fifteen years Dr. Wangu has taught South Asian Religions
and Art History at various American Universities. She has delivered
lectures on the meanings of symbols and myths in Hindu and Buddhist
art and religion. She has written extensively illustrated books
for young adults on Hinduism (1991) and Buddhism (1993) published
by Facts On File Inc. Her book A Goddess is Born, about the social,
political and cultural meanings of the Kashmiri goddess Khir Bhavani
is forthcoming.
Dr.
Wangu believes that if understood and experienced Hindu
goddesses have a potential for stimulating one's innermost self.
They are empowering examplars not only for Indian women but for
all.
Dr. Wangu is
currently working on two books: Learning to Look and Feel: An Approach
to the Visual Arts of India, which focuses on how to interpret and
understand images of Indian art; and Kamala's Final Ascend, her
first novel. She lives in Pennsylvania, USA her husband. They have
two daughters.
